China is nearing the completion of the Tianshan Shengli Tunnel

China is nearing the completion of the world’s largest tunnel – the Tianshan Shengli Tunnel. It represents one of the most impressive infrastructure achievements of modern China and a major landmark in global tunnel engineering. Located in the Tianshan Mountains, in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, the tunnel was designed to overcome some of the most challenging geographical and climatic conditions on the planet.

The longest mountain road tunnel in the world

With a length of approximately 22.1 kilometers, the Tianshan Shengli Tunnel is considered the longest road tunnel in the world built through a mountain range. It is part of the Urumqi–Yuli Expressway, a strategic route linking the northern and southern parts of the Xinjiang region, significantly reducing travel distances and journey times.

Before the tunnel was built, crossing the Tianshan Mountains could take several hours and was often impossible during winter due to heavy snowfall and extreme weather conditions. With the opening of the tunnel, the crossing time has been reduced from more than three hours to approximately 20–30 minutes.

Construction of the Tianshan Shengli Tunnel began in 2018 and took place under particularly harsh conditions:

  • altitudes exceeding 3,000 meters;
  • temperatures that can drop below –30°C;
  • thick layers of hard rock, permafrost zones, and a high seismic risk;
  • high rock pressure and groundwater infiltration.

To overcome these challenges, Chinese engineers employed advanced technologies, including high-power tunnel boring machines (TBMs), intelligent geological monitoring systems, and innovative solutions for stabilizing the tunnel walls.

Safety and state-of-the-art technology

The tunnel is equipped with modern safety systems that meet the strictest international standards:

  • intelligent ventilation systems for smoke extraction;
  • sensors for fire and gas detection;
  • adaptive lighting systems;
  • emergency exits and evacuation galleries;
  • continuous video surveillance.

These features ensure not only smooth traffic flow but also a high level of safety for drivers.

Economic and strategic importance

The Tianshan Shengli Tunnel is of major importance to the economic development of the Xinjiang region. It facilitates freight transport, supports tourism, improves population mobility, and contributes to the economic integration of remote areas.

The project is also regarded as a symbol of China’s ability to deliver large-scale, complex infrastructure and as an example of technological progress applied under extreme conditions.
